Great Smokey National Park
The Smokies are some of the most rugged terrain on the east coast. Trails are everything
from easy rides along trout streams to steep climbs to mountain tops. Make sure your
horse is well conditioned. Most trails in the Smokies are open to horses, but make
sure to get a current trail map to make sure the trail you are on is not restricted,
most trails aren't marked horse or non-horse. Camping with horses (and trailers) are
only allowed at developed horse camps within the park. Reservations are required and
are available up to 5 months in advance by calling (800) 365-2267 between 10am and
10pm EST. Horses stay in communial hitchracks and are not allowed in your camp.
I've stayed at Cataloochee and Big Creek.
Cataloochee is an early settlement in a remote valley with historic buildings and
wildlife like turkey, deer, wild boar, bear and newly reintorduced elk. It has
primative camping with pit toilets, but beauitful rides. One of the best ride is a loop
including Little Cataloochee trail that passes by old rock walls, foundations, a cabin
and church.
Big Creek has flush toilets in the campground. Best ride is a steep ride that takes you
to a fire tower on top of Mount Sterling. There are fantastic views on the rare clear
day.
I've seen the campground at Tow String. It's just a wide place at the end of a road.

Over 95% of the trails are single track, sandy trails, and old logging roads.
One of the waterfalls was used in Michael Mann's "Last

Harman Den is 7 miles from the Tenn. State line, on the NC side. The exit is right off I-40.
There are plenty of trails, and beautiful scenery.
From this area you can either camp or take day rides. You can ride into Tenn. or just
take trails that either make loops or almost anything you like to do. The trails are very
well kept, and they are in the process of building a horse camp.
It's also located near what is called Max Patch.
There are streams for fishing, watering your horse ( very important ) also a pond for
fishing. Hikers are also welcome.

Additinal Information:
Harmon Den (mOn not mAn) now has a horse camp. It has ten sites, 4 horses/8 people per
site, reservations only. Reservations can be made at the National Forest Service,
Appalachian Ranger District Office in Hot Springs, NC.
Phone (828) 622-3202 from 8 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
The Forest Service list about 14 miles of trails in the area, but logging roads are not
considered trails, so there is more riding than it seems.
Harmon Den is within 20 miles of Big Creek in the Smokies, so it could be part of a
longer trip.

Turkey Pen Horse Trails
Turkey Pen Horse Trails, NC - In the heart of the NC mountains, this part of
the National Forest is absolutely gorgeous!! Mountain laurel, rhododendron,
fire pink, and river crossings galore - absolutely quiet as church except
for the birds!!! However, like all beautiful places, the reason it is still
pretty is.... it is HARD to GET TO!!! The Mills River community horsepeople
opened up the parking area, but it is nigh impossible to turn around in if
more than 3 horse trailers or 6 mountain biker's cars are already there, and
there is no place to turn around on the access road, much less back up!!!
Advice: you can park at the bottom on the highway and ride one mile up the
gravel road to the trail-head.

Added Note:
National Geographic / Trails Illustrated has printed a topo map of the area,
"Pisgah Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina, USA", # 780,
Revised in 1998. ISBN: 1-56695-037-6.
It is the best map of the area I've ever seen and shows all the trails in the area
color coded for different uses.
(A misnomer - USFS calls this South Mills River - Turkey Pen is just one trail head and
the worst). In Pisgah National Forest. 34 miles of trails developed by a group called
the Pisgah Trailblazers. The trails were originally narrow gauge railroad beds used
when George Vanderbilt (of Biltmore Estate fame) owned and logged the land, and created
the first forestry school in America near Brevard.
The site of the School is now called the Cradle of Forestry. (The Blue Ridge Parkway
from US 191 to Mount Pisgah is built on Mr. Vanderbilt's carriage road to his hunting
lodge at Buck Spring Gap near Mt. Pisgah.) The trails are wonderful rides along
mountain streams, with many stream crossings. Primative camping is available at another
trail head, Wolf Ford, off US 276 near Pink Beds.
Nearby is North Mills River Trail and Bent Creek. North Mills River has 15 miles of
trails, more logging roads, and some primative camping sites. Bent Creek has probably
10 miles of trails open to horses, but is day use only. Many mountain bikes use the
North Mills River and Bent Creek trails.
The three groups of trails were at one time connected to the Biltmore Estate. I've read
a historical account of some forestry students who spent a three day weekend riding
from the school to the estate, past Asheville and all the way to Mount Mitchell and back.
I'd like to try that some day.

Biltmore Estate Equestrian Center
BILTMORE Riding Trails, NC - Did you know that part of the estate of the
Vanderbilts is still accessible to riders? Imagine "The Sound of Music" on
horseback as you canter across the big pasture hill thru the marguirites and
daisys!!
You can bring your carriage as well, many of the roads and trails are
fine for that. Hunting is only allowed one week a year, and no riders are
allowed out during that week. On the upper pastures overlooking the
Biltmore House, there are cross-country jumps, and many of the trails have
optional jumps for your enjoyment. You will ride along the edge of the
beautiful French Broad River and criss-cross safely under the Blue Ridge
Parkway and Interstate 26.
Update-- 2008
Biltmore trails: You must now buy an annual trail pass (call for current prices).
This includes individuals and members of horse clubs/organizations.

Love Valley
Love Valley has about 75 miles of trails with various creeks and
small ponds. All trails are marked fairly well. Has various places around town
to board horses in either slip stalls outside or in barn stalls with camping
right outside in the yard area. Some places have hot showers and bathroom
facilities.in town on main street only horses, mules,or horse/mule drawn carts
allowed.
Directions: Take I-77 to I-40 West tonc-115 north for about 10 miles then left
on Mountain View Church Road then follow signs.

Additional Information:
There's a wild west town in the middle of the 75 miles of trails. The 2000 census
lists Love Valley as the smallest town in North Carolina. It's also the cowboy capital
of North Carolina. It's the only place I've ever been able to tie my horse to a
hitching post and go into a saloon for a beer. They have a rodeo arena, several tack
shops and a blacksmith. Campgrounds are often hard to tell from the average front yard,
but there's always room to squeeze in another truck and horse trailer. The place is
wide open every weekend from Easter to Halloween. You'll either love it or hate it.

Tsali Recreation Area
Tsali is on a lot of top ten lists as one of the best mountain bike rides in the country. The trails are also
open to horseback riders on an alternating day basis. We rode the left loop trail on the day we went out
there. The trail is almost level; a rare thing in the mountains; and follows the bank of Fontana Lake.
The views are wonderful, with the lake below and a ring of mountains in the distance. The trail was very well
maintained. There are four main trails; Left Loop is the longest 11.9 miles. Right Loop is 11 miles, Mouse
Branch is 9 miles, and Thompson Loop is 7.7 miles. Bikes are allowed on a trail one day and horses the next
so you would have to come back two days in a row to have access to all the trails.
The horse trailer parking lot is good for several trailers but a little tight for turning around it.
The road in is steep, but paved. The campground is for mountain bikers and no horses are allowed.
Camping is allowed in Nantahala National Forest, but not close to the trails.

Bryson City: Barn and pasture. Two cabins 20 min. from the barn. Located in NATAHALA GORGE. No direct trail

Ride the Tsali Trail system, 4 marked loops that wind around Fontana Lake in the Natahala Forest. The trails
are a short haul from the barn. Trails are not steep and the mountains are awesome. Trail head parking is
limited, but we fit 8 rigs in the lot.
